Description
These 20x120 WWII Toko binoculars are a unique piece of history with a fascinating love story behind them. The intriguing story of American veteran Leslie B Jones starts when he was only 17 years old and lied about his age to enlist in the US Navy. Jones served in all three theaters of WWII. In 1945 Jones was serving aboard the USS Swenning DE 394 Destroyer Escort ship, when they docked in then Japanese held Guam. The locals were very fond of Americans and strongly disliked the Japanese, as a result, they helped the Americans in any way they could to take back Guam. On the eve of December 31st, he went to a New Years' dance where he met a local island girl by the name of June. They danced the night away and spent a few days together before he was set to depart on January 10th. Before his departure, he met June's mother and father who gifted him these original Japanese Toko Binoculars as a WWII appreciation gift. They were brought back on the ship and were used on the deck for enemy lookouts day and night. Jones kept and cherished the binoculars until he, at 94 years old, decided it was time to part with them. They have been fully restored to their original glory by the very best optical technicians.
