Tokyo Optical Company Legacy, Preserved

In 1942, Nippon Kogaku K.K. produced what many historians and collectors regard as some of the finest naval optical instruments of the Pacific Theater. A limited number were mounted on Imperial Japanese Navy vessels – used by sailors scanning the horizon for incoming Allied aircraft.

The 15×100mm "Big Eye" configuration was mounted on up to thirteen Japanese Imperial Navy vessels, where sailors operated them continuously to scan for Allied aircraft approaching over vast ocean horizons.

The Battle of Midway proved the critical importance of superior long-range optical detection. These instruments represented the pinnacle of wartime innovation.
